Meet the Turkish Lira – the official currency in Northern Cyprus.

This currency began to be used in 2005 in both Turkey and Northern Cyprus while in the southern part of the island, the euro has been used since Greek Cyprus was admitted to the European Union.

The Turkish lira appears in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 banknotes and in Corus coins (which are like cents) in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, in addition to a 1-pound coin. On all the new coins and banknotes, appears a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the father of the Turkish nation, who is considered the founder of modern Turkey.

Most businesses will also happily accept payments in foreign currencies like Euros, British Pounds, US Dollars and most credit cards are welcomed by many hotels, restaurants and shops.

When you are interested in buying a particular product, please note the price marking which may be marked sometimes in Euros and sometimes in Turkish Lira (TL) – which can be confusing!
